Re Examining the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation

Over the last two decades, the world has witnessed growth in the technology space which has altered the way business is transacted. This technological advancement has increased collation, use and processing of data and consequently the need for data protection. In May 2018, the European Union enacted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which essentially set a structure for the collection and processing of data by any institution. The regulation which requires businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of EU citizens in respect of transactions that occur within EU member states, imposedstiff sanctions for non-compliance or infraction of the Regulations. Nigeria followed suit in January 2019 and established a regulatory framework for the processing of data similar to the GDPR.
